August Mobile App Development Report

7 Sep
2015

New apps are on the horizon, but first a couple of updates….

  • Crunchy Numbers Math Arcade received a minor update that improved the tweet feature to automatically input the hashtag(#CrunchyNumbersMathArcade) for the game in the editable tweet text box. The process of uploading the new build(and of course waiting on review period) took longer than the work in the actual update itself. Most players never tweet scores and I don’t think many people will use it in this game, but I wanted to do it because this is one of my favorite apps I’ve developed so it gets spoiled.
  • Motivational Quotes to inspire received a nice update. More info on it can be found on the Motivational Quotes to Inspire 1.5 Update post. One of the main changes in the new version was a minor update to the Settings section layout as seen below.

  • In August I also worked a lot of my new pharmacy quiz app which included a lot of research, heavy work with tables, & UI design. I’ve started to use the Paper app along with the Pencil stylus to mock up UI designs. Working on an interfaces in a drawing app is really neat. I can quickly change things to roughly see how it will look on different devices and also test if it’s user friendly for the users hands. One of the first main menu iterations can be seen below, the finished version is still incomplete. There’s been a lot of work going into this app. I’ve been able to use a bit of data and some code from Quiz of Medicine, but a lot of the new app is being built from of the ground up.  This new medical app will focus on the top 200 drugs in 2015 for the medicine portion of the quizzes whereas Quiz of Medicine focused on featuring over 400 different medications. My new pharmacy app will include brands, generics, indications and drug class quiz types like Quiz of Medicine, but it will also include a couple of new quiz types as well. This will be a very focused well rounded pharmacy app for students and various people in different medical positions.

  • During August I also started to compile a list of words for my new Word Owl’s Word Search app. This will be the Halloween Edition so the overall design and words will be of course be Halloween themed. This app will be completely kid friendly so there will be no horror images or shocking words. I’ll be putting my medical app aside and working on this app more in September because I plan on releasing it during the first week of October.
  • Somehow I thought I was going to be finished with the pharmacy app during August and then jumping right into the Halloween word search app after, but other plans got in the way of those plans……..and I’ve been really distracted by Rocket League during my app development time! Rocket League is a very fun game that features two of my favorite things; racing and soccer! The game was free in July on PS Plus and I had never heard of it before downloading it, but definitely glad that I did. Ok, back to working on the word search! Until next time ∞

Word Owl’s Word Search is a neat, big, and colorful word search for children. This Kindergarten Edition of Word Owl’s Word Search features over 100 sight words for children in or around Kindergarten. These words have been gathered from numerous sight word lists provided by real Kindergarten classes in different schools. Help your kindergartener or soon to be kindergartener learn and retain several words while having fun!

√ Over 100 different sight words
√ 10 words to find per puzzle
√ Customizable letter and background colors
√ Sharp & colorful high quality graphics

(Sight words are commonly used words that children are encouraged to memorize as a whole by sight, so that they can automatically recognize these words when they see them without having to use any distracting strategies. Sight words account for a large percentage of the words used in literature for children. One advantage for children being able to recognize sight words automatically is that the child will be able to identify the majority of words in a book before they even attempt to read it. When the child is able to do that they’ll be able to concentrate on the meaning and comprehension as they read without having to stop to figure out the actual word.)

Jumbo Egg Hunt 2 was released for Windows on 04/16, but it’s still receiving less downloads than the original Jumbo Egg Hunt. Remember, Jumbo Egg Hunt 2 is better than the first one and it has 100% more JUMBO! Also, I just wanted to add it to this Windows release post since I didn’t make a separate one for it last month.

Nook App Developer Post

It’s official……..I’m now a part of the Nook(Barnes & Noble) App Store! Earlier today Professor Piggy Bank and Jumbo Egg Hunt became available for Nook tablets. They’re currently supported by the Nook Tablet, Nook Color, and Nook HD/HD+ Tablets. The Nook tablets run on an Android OS similar to other tablets that I’ve developed for. I already had an Android build of Professor Piggy Bank & Jumbo Egg Hunt ready so porting those apps over didn’t take long at all. After completing all of the meta-data I just had to change a link within the apps and they were ready.

Jumbo Egg Hunt 2 is currently under review for the Nook App Store. I submitted it after the other apps were approved so hopefully it will be available soon as well. The process for publishing apps on the Nook App Store is set up differently than the other app stores so I wanted to go through it completely with those two apps before I submitted my newest one. All of the app stores have their own submission differences, but two of the main differences on this app store were the first initial step and the final review process.

In order to publish apps on the Nook App Store you have to first become a “Qualified Nook Developer.” In order to become one I had to fill out some specific info and answer questions that resembled those of an interview. After I was approved I went through the same steps like the other app stores in regards to adding age ratings, descriptions, screenshots & etc. Then came another new part, I had to submit the app for meta-data approval before uploading the APK app file. After the meta-data was approved I uploaded the APK for technical review. After it passed technical review it went through a business review. Then after the business review was passed the app started the publishing process for the app store itself.

However, for Jumbo Egg Hunt 2(my third submission) I didn’t have to wait for meta-data to be approved to upload the app file for review so I’m not sure if that step still exists. There’s a lot of informative information about the entire process on their website so I was never confused or stuck on anything though, plus I guess I have a good deal of experience when it comes to submitting apps and whatnot. Overall it didn’t take that long to get an app published on their app store for me. I started the process in the middle of February off & on and I didn’t run into any errors or rejections.

I like the clean presentation of their app store and the Nook devices themselves are very nice. They also seem to have a nice casual & educational market/audience overall, and several of my apps fit very well into those categories. I look forward to making more of my apps available for Nook tablets in the future. Since my final app builds for Nook are similar to those for the Kindle Fire, I’ll probably try making some if not all of my apps available on the Nook App Store concurrently with my Amazon releases. Apple, Amazon, Google Play, Windows, and now Barnes & Noble………bringing the total number of app stores I’m on to five! A big THANK YOU to all of the companies that are distributing my apps. I think those are enough for now……..time to put all of my app focused occasions back into the apps themselves.
